Celebrating Growth: The Inspiring Progress of Students at Floyd Elementary

At Floyd Elementary in Mesquite ISD, this year wasn't just about learning the alphabet or counting to twenty. It was about something much deeper. It was about watching five- and six-year-olds open their eyes to their own potential, tracking their own milestones, and beaming with a newfound, deeply felt pride.

When the ESGI team arrived at Floyd Elementary to help host a special red carpet celebration, we thought we were there to honor assessment data. But the moment we stepped onto campus, we realized we were witnessing a beautiful transformation. This wasn't about numbers on a spreadsheet.

    It was a story of:

    • Blossoming Confidence: Children realizing that they can do hard things.
    • True Ownership: Little learners taking charge of their own educational journeys.
    • Teacher Empowerment: Educators receiving the gift of time, allowing them to wrap their arms around struggling students in the exact moment they need it most.

For Floyd Elementary, a first-year ESGI school, the heartbeat of this change resonated far beyond the classroom walls.

⏱️ Trading the "Wait and See" for Right-Now Support

Like so many dedicated educators, the leadership team at Floyd Elementary was searching for a gentler, more continuous way to keep a pulse on their students. They wanted to move away from the high-stakes pressure of distant benchmarks.

"We were hoping this year we could get a consistent and steady pulse check on individual skills and build instruction off of that quickly, and not wait for a longer benchmark time period," shared school leadership.

Before ESGI, teachers were often forced to play a waiting game. They had to wait weeks for major assessment results to see where the gaps were. By the time the data finally landed on their desks, precious weeks of instructional magic had slipped away.

But this year, the waiting ended. With real-time insights, teachers could instantly see who needed an extra hand, allowing them to:

    • Pivot in the Moment: Adjust daily lessons smoothly to meet kids right where they are.
    • Create Cozy Intervention Groups: Instantly gather students who need the same extra love and attention on a specific skill.
    • Design with Love: Customize assessments so they perfectly mirror the exact, comforting routines of their daily classrooms.

Shannon Lanning, the Early Literacy Instructional Coach at Floyd Elementary, saw firsthand how this shifted the culture during Professional Learning Communities (PLCs):

"So often we hand teachers assessments and say, ‘Use this. This is what you’re going to use to test your kids.’ But I think ESGI empowers teachers to choose how they want the question displayed, how they want students to respond... the teachers are bought in."

🎯 From Guesswork to Absolute Precision (and Beautiful Growth!)

There is nothing sweeter than a teacher knowing exactly how to help a child who is struggling. Instead of simply knowing a student is having a hard time with math, Floyd’s teachers could pinpoint the exact stepping stone that felt a little slippery.

Instead of guessing, teachers could ask:

    • Are they struggling to visually identify the number 8?
    • Is it the pictorial representation that is confusing them?
    • Are they stumbling only when numbers climb above 10?

"Rather than giving some generic test that covers all of that, with ESGI we can actually pinpoint the specific part of the scale students need work with," Shannon shared warmly.

Because teachers were able to make these microscopic, loving adjustments in real time, the growth at the end of the year was nothing short of a miracle.

    • Where they started: At the beginning of the year, about 75% of kindergarten students were below grade level in their skills.
    • Where love and data took them: By the end of the year, a breathtaking 85% of those same kindergarteners were completely on level for math.

That kind of growth doesn't happen by accident. It happens when passionate educators have tools they can trust to guide their next steps every single day.

🍏 When the "Pie Chart" Becomes a Badge of Honor Untitled design (13)-1

Perhaps the most beautiful chapter of Floyd Elementary’s story belongs to the children themselves. Assessment didn't feel like a scary test this year—it felt like a game they were winning.

In every classroom, students eagerly leaned over their screens, watching their personal ESGI pie charts fill with bright green. They started asking to be assessed, viewing it not as a chore but as a chance to show off how much they had grown.

"My students are always very excited because they know the pie is getting closer to getting fully green," shared kindergarten teacher Jennifer Yanez, smiling. "They are working toward that goal and they’re soon going to meet that goal."

Alejandrina Martinez recalled the joy in her students' eyes as they watched their progress charts lift upward: "They get so excited, especially when we look at the graph and they see their little graph going up and up. They know that the closer they are to the top, the closer they are to their goal."

It completely rephrased the language of evaluation in their young minds:

    • From: "Am I doing this wrong?"
    • To: "Let's see how far I've grown!"

The joy became so contagious that the children even wanted to share it with their leaders. One teacher laughed as she remembered her students trying to draw paper pie charts for her on her desk: "They also try to give me my own pie chart and celebrate my growth as a teacher."

Floyd Elem 6🏡 Bridging the Distance Between School and Home

A child's learning journey doesn't end when the school bell rings at 3:00 PM. Floyd Elementary used ESGI to invite parents into the magic, creating a seamless bridge between the classroom carpet and the living room rug.

With personalized parent letters and ready-to-print flashcards, families finally had an answer to the age-old question, "What did you do at school today?"

For the school's bilingual classrooms, this tool was a lifeline:

    • In Spanish and English: Automatically translated parent letters took the guesswork out of home practice.
    • Targeted and Gentle: Parents received specific, bite-sized goals rather than overwhelming, vague progress reports.
    • Complete Peace of Mind: As Alejandrina Martinez noted, "It lets the parents know what’s going on in the classroom, and it helps me not leave anything out."

👠 Walking the Red Carpet: Celebrating Growth, Not Perfection

To crown a year of hard work, Floyd Elementary threw open its doors for a spectacular, unforgettable red carpet celebration.

The halls were alive with music and cheers. Students dressed proudly in colors that represented the milestones they had conquered. With every step they took down that carpet, teachers clapped, parents wiped away tears, and the children stood a little taller.

"I think for our students, it’s celebrating all the hard work they’ve done and showing how much growth they’ve achieved from the beginning of the year all the way to the end," Shannon shared. "They’re excited to see that the hard work has a payoff."

Because at the end of the day, not every child starts at the same place, and not every child learns at the same speed. But when we stop looking for perfection and start celebrating progress, every single child begins to believe that they are capable of changing the world.

❤️ More Than Data: A Culture of Love

At Floyd Elementary, ESGI became so much more than software. It became the heartbeat of their school community—a tool that fostered:

    • Real-time, loving instructional choices
    • Deeply collaborative teacher communities
    • Joyful student ownership and self-belief
    • Stronger, clearer partnerships with families
    • An absolute culture of celebration

Most importantly, it helped create a sanctuary where mistakes were just steps on the way to green pie charts, and where every child could look at their teacher and proudly say: "Look how much I’ve grown."
